PARVAT BUDDIES: Trek To Twin Forts of ANKAI+TANKAI on 20-21st Sept 2019 (Saturday).
Brief Info about the place:
ANKAI (900m/2953ft) and TANKAI (830m/2723ft) are twin hills forming part of the Ajanta-Satmala range, situated at a distance of 10kms from the town of Manmad. These twin forts were built to keep surveillance on the Surat-Aurangabad trade route. The perpendicular rock structure provides a natural defence to these forts. Historically, these were said to be the strongest hill-forts captured by the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in 1635 AD. The forts command a grand view of the Khandesh and Godavari valleys.
It is enjoyable to view the trains running to and fro Manmad from the summit of Ankai Fort. One is greeted by excellent views of Manmad town, Hadbi-chi-Shendi (a prominent pinnacle in the region), Gorakhnath hill, Manmad-Shirdi highway and the distant peaks of the Chandwad range to the north-west.
While, Ankai Fort is famous for its numerous doorways, rock steps, bastions, pond and the temple of Agastya Rishi, a revered Hindu sage, Tankai Fort boasts of a vast grassy plateau adorned with a pond and a temple of Lord Shankar. Apart from this, one also finds ancient Jain and Bramhani caves at the foothills of the forts.
